World Refugee Day – Nduta Refugee Camp, Tanzania

World Refugee Day – Nduta Refugee Camp, Tanzania

June 20th marks World Refugee Day. Irish Aid works to respond to humanitarian crises around the world, providing humanitarian relief and multilateral aid to our NGO partners and partner organisations. As part of this response, Irish Aid is committed to helping refugees around the world.

In October 2017, Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development Ciarán Cannon, visited Nduta refugee camp in Tanzania. Irish Aid supports various partner organisations in Nduta to provide essential services such as healthcare and education, as well as food and water for the 123,000 refugees from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who call the camp home. Irish Aid aims to provide a normal life for families living in Nduta and last year Ireland co-invested in a new school building so that children and teachers can hold their classes indoors. While visiting the camp, Minister Cannon had the opportunity to engage with the families who live there and participated in a French class with the students.

Ireland has provided €2.5m over two years in support of refugees in Tanzania. As part of this funding, Ireland has given €1.5m to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to not only build this new school but also to extend other services to families in the camp, such as primary healthcare. In addition to this, a further €500,000 was allocated to World Food Programme (WFP) for food rations, while Oxfam also received support from Irish Aid to provide water and sanitation in the camp. In conjunction with our partners, Irish Aid remains committed to assisting refugees around the world to live with dignity in camps such as Nduta.
