Volunteering Overseas

Ireland’s Policy for International Development: A Better World recognises the contribution of Irish volunteers to development cooperation.  Volunteering is one of the traditions upon which Ireland’s aid programme is built.  We are committed to reviewing and refreshing our approach to international volunteering and increasing our engagement with Irish volunteers in developing countries and those who have returned to Ireland.

Ireland’s commitment to building on its proud tradition of volunteering abroad is reflected in Ireland’s Policy for International Development A Better World (2019). That commitment recognises the rich legacy of overseas volunteering amongst Irish people and their solidarity with those in greatest need. A Better World committed to a review of the Volunteering Initiative  (2013). Commissioned in 2020, the Irish Aid Volunteering Initiative Review found the Initiative contributed to increased quality of volunteering and prioritised investment in training, good practice and awareness-raising to ensure volunteering did no harm.
